Sound the Chimes by Jesse McManus. $4
Digest size, 24 pages, black and white
Jesse McManus is an artist close to my heart. His work is a genuine pleasure although not an easy one. You get pulled along over bumps and blips, little stylistic flourishes abound, but they never feel excessive. McManus cartooning is a punch of art, that comes across like a friendly jab. You feel the bruise later. This mini is a good summary, digest pill of everything McManus does: wordplay, simple actions made insanely complicated due to being translated into hyper cartooning terms, and just a rush of tapping into that obvious-yet-hard-to-pin-down lifeblood of classic cartooning and animation. Beautiful work, worth your time and attention.
